Bruce Chambers

Bruce completed a diploma in Cabinet Making from Conestoga College. He received the Mastercraftsman Award, 1983-1984, for a cherry Queen Ann Highboy. In 1984, Bruce opened his business starting with furniture repairs. In making repairs, much was learned about how wood failed and how to correctly work with wood. Bruce used this knowledge to build furniture. Bruce is an artisan cabinetmaker who makes furniture the traditional way: one piece at a time according to tried and true craftsman techniques. He creates Windsor chairs, harvest tables and beds to case goods. He works with cherry, maple and other fine woods. From spindles to dovetails, many components are fashioned with hand tools.

Bruce has developed a deep respect for historic preservation while assisting with the restoration of several heritage buildings. Thus his work extends beyond furniture making to include restoration and building of architectural components for period houses or a new house. With his knowledge and skill he designs and makes built in cupboards, fireplace mantles and front entrances.

Through his workshops, Bruce has demonstrated the use of hand tools and how to sharpen them. Using hand tools, participants learned planeing, mortising and tenoning methods to make a single paneled hanging cupboard door.
