Bill Yuen
DIRECTOR

Bill spends a lot of time observing what has meaning for people and learning about why, which he believes are two of the most important questions about places. He is the Executive Director of a small non-profit called Heritage Vancouver Society in Vancouver BC, which practices heritage on the traditional and ancestral lands that were taken away from the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh. Bill came across Willowbank from a distance as a source of learning on heritage as a holistic concept. Willowbank's conception of a cultural landscape introduced him to a comprehensive human-centred way of approaching heritage and has been one of the central influences on how he carries out his work. He has a graduate degree in Urban Studies from Simon Fraser University.
Motivation: While geographically distant, Willowbank has been formational to me and my work. But I've come to realize that Willowbank isn't just significant for its contribution to the heritage field/heritage thought and its unique philosophy and approach towards education. It is extremely significant to the different people who have developed a range of connections to it, particularly the students and the people involved in making possible the learning and seemingly ordinary interactions that take place in this beautiful physical environment.
Vision: I hope to be useful helping behind the scenes with organizational governance, supporting the process to achieve our major goals and make sure Willowbank continues being the meaningful and special place that it is.
Advice: It was a wonderful experience for me to visit in person and witness the immense love that staff, board members, students, alumni and supporters have for Willowbank. Willowbank the school was envisioned to be an important place when it was created over 20 years ago; after being present in the school together with the students, staff and board members, I can understand that it certainly is a meaningful place.
