Willowbank gives equal weight to hands-on skills and academic performance, and this is central to all its programs.

HISTORIC BUILDING ASSESSMENT

Date: July 16-19, 2012
Instructors: John Silburn and Julian Smith
Course Fee: $1000
Time: Monday - Thursday, 9-4:30 pm

Participants will be taken through the steps required for a detailed investigation and assessment of a historic building, the 1834 main house at Willowbank, a fine example of the Classical Revival style, will be used as a laboratory for this hands-on learning experience. The assessment of the building’s site, its style, its patterns of access and layout, its materials, its finishes, its structure, and its systems, will be used to develop a statement of significance, and to prepare value-based recommendations for its future use and treatment. The sessions will be led by John Silburn, structural engineer, and Julian Smith, architect and architectural conservator, who between them have assessed hundreds of historic buildings for clients in all levels of government and the private sector.

A welcome reception will be hosted at Willowbank on Wednesday evening, May 4th,  7-9 pm. Coffee breaks and lunch will be provided for the duration of the course. Please let us know if you have dietary restrictions.
