Willowbank has been a leader in this field for many years, and the Centre brings together its experience and expertise and makes them available to a wider audience.

CONSULTING SERVICES

The Centre for Cultural Landscape provides consulting services to all levels of government, the academic sector, and the private sector. 

Consulting services are overseen by the Director of the Centre, Julian Smith, and can involve the various faculty associates and Board members connected to the Centre, as well as, on occasion, students in the Diploma Program or recent graduates.  

Consulting services can take many forms:

  • Integrating a cultural landscape approach into major design and development projects involving sensitive cultural heritage resources 
  • Developing policy documents in the cultural heritage field 
  • Developing short courses and training modules related to cultural landscape and cultural heritage activities more generally. 
  • Advising on curriculum development and institutional development related to cultural heritage theory and practice.

 Examples of recent or current projects include the following.

  • Advisory services for a major development within the Niagara Escarpment UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. 
  • Advisory services toCanada’s Department of Foreign Affairs on the integration of a sensitive cultural heritage property into a new chancery. 
  • Presentation to the World Bank in Washington,DC, on cultural heritage approaches within urban design and development activity. 
  • Advisory services to a developer on a landmark commercial development involving a contested historic property in a major downtown centre. 
  • Design and presentation of a course on Cultural Heritage Landscapes for a provincial ministry of culture 
  • Discussions with college systems in two Canadian provinces on potential education and training programs based on the Willowbank model.
  • Participation in the development of educational and training guidelines by the ICOMOS International Education and Training Committee
  • Participation with the World Heritage Centre of UNESCO on the development of the new international recommendation on Historic Urban Landscapes

Presentations and articles on cultural heritage issues for UNESCO, the University of Montreal, Heritage Canada, the US National Trust for Historic Preservation, and other organizations.
